Local AttractionsWe sit at the base of the Great Stirling Range just 15 minutes east of the Mount Baker Township or 40 minutes north of Albany. With 40 acres of lush native Australian Bush it is ideal to help refresh the mind and with the views all year around you will never be disappointed. Kendenup country ClubFor the keen golfers there is always Kendenup Country Club. Tee off and enjoy your day amongst the trees. The Stirling Range National ParkThe Stirling Range is a wonderful asset of international significance that is in need of protection for future generations. The Stirling Range is a mecca for bushwalking, sightseeing and rock climbing. The Stirling Range stretches 65 kms from east to west. The Highest peak is Bluff Knoll rising 1095 meters above sea level, this is the highest peak in south-western Australia. The main scenic drive stretches from Redgum Pass Road to Chesterpass Road, there are many lookout points through this stunning 42 kilometers drive. The stirling range is home to over 1500 plant species, 148 bird species and 19 species of native mammals. This fragile ecosystem is under constant threat from feral animals, dieback and human intervention. Walks range from 1.5 hours return up to 2-3 days return. When entering The Range please remember to tread gently, do not litter and leave the flowers to grow. Weather conditions can change rapidly so please come well prepared. The PorongurupsAfter a 15 minutes drive east of Mt Barker you will find the oldest mountain range in the world, The Porongurups. This Mountain range is over 1 million years old with towering granite peaks, ancient forest and Karri trees. There are many walks in the porongurups ranging from easy strolls to harder hikes. For the winelovers and foodies the region is one of Australias most awarded wine growing region renowned for its superb cool climate wines. Many wineries have opened their doors around this area for wine tasting and cellar sales. You will also find Lothlorien Studio in the area where awarded artist David Taylor has his studio and workshop, the studio is open by appointment most days. There are many great spots for picknicks, otherwise authentic Thai food, coffee, tea, cakes and lighter dishes is on offer in the area. Mount BarkerThe Old Police StationThe Old Police Station is a great place to visit when in Mt Barker. It was built in 1868 by convicts. Allow more than an hour to walk through the beautiful gardens and cover all facets. Opening hours are 10am-3pm weekends, Public and School Holidays or by appointment. St Werburgh's ChapelSt Werburgh's chapel was built in 1873 by George Edward Egerton-Warburton. There are a total of 32 religious buildings in the world dedicated to St Werburgh's one is in Zimbabwe, one is in Ireland, one is here in Mt Barker and the remaining 29 are located in England. All services is held by candel light as the building has never had power. The Banksia FarmThe worlds ONLY complete arboretum of the 78 species of Banksia, many Dryandras, Hakeas, Grevillias and other showy wildflowers. This 5ha wildflower garden is open March 1st - June 30th. August 1st - November 30th. Bouverie Trout and MarronFor something different why not try recreational fishing by appointment. specialists in smoked trout. Albany day tripsWhale WorldTake a trip to Albanys historic whaling station. Professionally guided tours that will take you on a journey to remember. A great day out for all age groups. Albany Dolphin and Whale CruisesTake a day to go whale spotting for Humpback and Southern Right Whales. The first whales is seen in June, and most of the Humpbacks have past albany by late August, The whales then return in November.
